La Candelaria

A inicios de enero les escribí un artículo sobre la Rosca de reyes en México y ahí prometí hablar sobre los tamales del 2 de febrero y la fiesta de la Candelaria. Pues henos aquí.

La próxima semana, muchas familias y grupos de amigos mexicanos nos reuniremos en la casa de aquél a quien le tocó el niño dios en la rosca. Él o ella deberá ofrecer tamales y atole a los invitados. Todos iremos muy contentos a cerrar, no con muy buen ánimo, los festejos que iniciamos en diciembre.

Lo de los tamales y el atole es ya algo bastante bueno, pues los sabores de ambos son tantos que todos salimos satisfechos. Pero algunas familias, la mía no, por ejemplo, respetan la parte más religiosa de la fiesta de este día: llevar al niño dios a la Iglesia.

Los mexicanos viven el catolicismo impregnándolo de su estilo y de otras creencias particulares. En este día, cuando llevan a bendecir al niño dios de cerámica, se evidencian muchas de esas particularidades. El niño dios puede ser pequeñito, como de unos 5 cm, o más grandecito, como de 50 cm; en casa hay que vestirlo como un bebé, como algún santo al que la familia sea devoto, como alguno que haya concedido algún favor o como algo sobre lo que se esperen bendiciones especiales. Como esta fiesta religiosa no escapa a los intereses y a la picardía del mexicano, vemos varios niños Jesús con el uniforme de la selección, para pedir ayuda divina en los partidos internacionales que vienen o para agradecer la recibida en los partidos pasados.

El resto del año, la figura del niño dios se queda en algún lugar seguro de la casa para evitar que se rompa. En la siguiente navidad será arrullado durante las posadas y recibirá ropa nueva en el siguiente febrero.

I have a bachelor´s and a master´s degree in Classics; however Italian was the language that made me fell in love with the possibility of embracing a whole new world while studying a new language. I worked as a research fellow for the Diccionario del Español de México. Since 2009 I´ve been teaching in universities, high schools, and as a freelance subjects such as Latin, Italian, English, literature, upper Spanish for Mexican students, Spanish writing, Spanish as a foreign language, etc. I have also been an online teacher for 3 years. I had my first Spanish as a foreign language students in 2007: they were two Swedish young women who came to live to Mexico with their husbands: we used to drink coffee or have walks while having lessons; nowadays, I teach Spanish as a foreign language in the city where I live, I meet my students at coffee shops, restaurants, beaches or in a Mexican cuisine class! No matter what your Spanish level is, I´m able to help you! I base my teaching in the Common European Framework, I follow Instituto Cervantes guidelines and advices, and I contrast several sources in order to offer you solid instructional materials. I like to use attractive and engaging teaching aid for my lessons: songs, articles, recipes, series, books, movies... it all depends on my students´ level, likes and interests.
